Fairgounds face-lift about finished

Improvements cost more than $12M in sales tax funds

After eight years and more than $12 million, the series of dramatic improvements to the San Angelo Fairgrounds is essentially complete.

Starting with the construction of the 1st Community Credit Union Spur Arena and finishing this month with seal coating the San Angelo Coliseum parking lot, the city's half-cent sales tax has funded a raft of improvements that have overhauled the face of the fairgrounds.

"It looks like everything is finished," said Kathy Keane, executive director of the City of San Angelo Development Corp., which administers the tax. "We are substantially complete."

In the end, Keane said, the expense has been worthwhile - the San Angelo Stock Show & Rodeo, held each February at the fairgrounds, is estimated to provide about $17 million in economic impact to the city each year. The Spur Arena was a key amenity in attracting the American Junior Rodeo Association National Finals, which is among the largest economic-impact events in the city, for at least four years through 2010.
