Minister Cullen presents 2008 Irish Horse Racing Awards
Xornal Galicia | Lunes, 08 Diciembre, 2008 - 05:40

Martin Cullen TD, Minister for Arts, Sport and Tourism today (Monday 8
December 2008) attended the Irish Horse Racing Awards ceremony held in the Shelbourne Hotel, Dublin. This is the sixth year of the awards, the winners of which are selected by the Irish racing media to recognise excellence in the sport of horse racing
Speaking at the event Minister Cullen said that: Occasions such as this
are an opportunity for us to pause and look back at the achievements of the
year gone by, and also to give the champions of the sport the recognition
they deserve. He commended the Chair of Horse Racing Ireland Denis Brosnan
and the Chief Executive, Brian Kavanagh for their work in the development
of the sport of horse racing in Ireland.

Minister Cullen also said: "For a small country, Ireland holds
a
pre-eminent position in the thoroughbred racing and breeding world. Our
foal population is the third largest in the world, accounting for 42% of
total EU output, and our horses, jockeys, trainers and owners regularly
succeed at the highest international levels.

Minister Cullen added: "Since the establishment of the Horse and
Greyhound
Racing Fund in 2001, this Government has shown an unprecedented commitment
to the development of the horse racing industry in Ireland. By the end of
2008, Horse Racing Ireland will have received almost 437 million from the
Fund and in 2009 its Fund allocation will be almost 56 million. This
commitment to investment has enabled Ireland to develop into a world centre
of excellence for horse racing and breeding."

Congratulating the award nominees, Minister Cullen said: "Given
the
strength and depth of Irelands racing community, it is indeed a great
achievement to be nominated for an award; quite apart from who emerges as
the winner in each category. I want to thank the winners and all the
participants for their sustained pursuit of excellence.
